Flu can make Addison's Disease and adrenal insufficiency harder to manage, giving unstable cortisol levels and potentially triggering an adrenal crisis.
The flu jab is the best way of protecting yourself against the flu and reduces the risk of having to go to hospital for more invasive treatment.
As Dr Alessandro Prete, Consultant Endocrinologist: “Do not underestimate the flu. For steroid-dependent people, catching the flu can have serious consequences such as developing a life-threatening adrenal crisis. A 2013 ADSHG member survey showed that one in four adrenal crises were triggered by the flu or flu-like illnesses. Most flu infections recover fully within a few days, but it is imperative that people who are steroid-dependent follow the sick day rules.”(Addison's Disease Self-Help Group Blog)
Having the COVID vaccination is also recommended for those with Addison's Disease and you can have both at the same time. COVID Vaccines are safe and provide great protection.
Everyone will react differently to having vaccinations so it's important to listen to your body and alter doses of cortisol and/or glucocorticoid if needed. For example, if you have a needle phobia this could cause additional stress and therefore more cortisol will be used up, meaning you may need more to replace what you have used.
The NHS has some great advice on why vaccinations are important and the safest way to protect yourself. This includes information on possible side effects and the methods by which you can report these.
If you do experience symptoms then you are encouraged to follow the sick day rules as you would anytime that you feel unwell. Some chemists and GP surgeries offer ‘walk-in’ injections for these eligible. Others will need to book their injections online or directly with their GP surgeries.
