The European Society of Endocrinology and the European Hormone and Metabolism Foundation have joined together to produce 10 recommendations for good hormone health.
As part of European Hormone Day for which the mission is to increase awareness, encourage advocacy and improve policies — these handy tips are great for anyone who has a hormone-related condition or anyone who has symptoms and has yet to be diagnosed.
These diseases may be rare but they still affect 30 million people living in the EU — with over 400 rare conditions connected to the endocrine system it’s important to raise awareness of the problems people can experience with hormone-related conditions.
The recommendations are split into four distinct categories:
Adopting a healthy lifestyle
Preventing avoidable hormone deficiencies
Reducing exposure to endocrine disruptors
Being aware of the early signs and symptoms of endocrine disease
Many of the ideas reference good general health and well-being. Such as being active, eating well and getting enough sleep. Some are less obvious and include — avoiding plastic packaging — improving indoor air quality and choosing care and cosmetic products wisely.
Perhaps the most significant part of these support guidelines is the symptoms of diseases which are wide-ranging from:
Unexplained weight loss or gain
Sensitivity to cold
Changes in appetite
Brittle hair and nails
Fatigue
Dry and flaky skin
Onset of depression
Extreme thirst
Loss of libido
Fertility problems and
Changes in the menstrual cycle
A long list that could easily be mistaken for other conditions. If you are suffering from any of these it’s important to see your GP as soon as possible. Some simple tests could quickly rule out or diagnose a problem.
Early detection will lead to better treatment and management of what can be very difficult and challenging conditions to live with.
