‘If I can do it anybody can’ — a phrase which is loaded with false hope — a lack of reality — a sense of dread — fear even.
Can we reach the lofty heights of those running multiple ultra marathons? Not possible for all to accomplish.
Can we all write a book and get it published? Highly unlikely unless you are already famous and have a team to help you. Or you have been an established writer for many years — prior to the digital age and downfall of the feel of an actual book.
Can we all raise a million pounds? Doubtful unless you have the status or access to some serious publicity and a story to tell.
Can everyone with the same chronic condition accomplish the same daily tasks and activities? Of course not — there are different levels of illness — varying levels of medications — the impact of additional medical conditions — our living conditions — stresses and strains of life. All need to be considered.
We are told not to compare — but we are also told to be inspired. TV shows do it all the time. Baking — pottery — sculpting — woodwork — crafting — some of our favourite shows. These however offer a better level of achievement. The formation of hobbies and some escapism — the outcome far less important — the improvement showing over time — we don’t have to be the best.
The news is littered with these stories of remarkable achievements — a way to through some positivity and joy — weaved in amongst the sad stories of war, the cost of living crisis and the extreme weather causing devastation.
Try subscribing to Positive news for some relief and some learning. Both will support mental health.
Try watching Channel 4’s Woodworker of the Year — The Great British Bake Off — try Kristie’s Homemade Crafting— even the Pottery Throw Down.
