Can we not eat out in peace?

Believe it or not, those of us with chronic conditions need to eat. Sometimes it's nice to do this somewhere other than at home. To access a different menu — enter a warm environment — both on a personal level and a comfort level.

Nourishment and interaction are both required elements of life. Why should we be deprived just because we are faced with medical conditions and disabilities?

All we want is some sanctuary. The opportunity to do something different and memorable. Perhaps on our own or in my case with my carer. Giving her the night off — some freedom — a menu of choice that she does not have to create and make. My best efforts to help not taking away the responsibility she feels to feed and water me.

Is it really too much to ask that we can sit and eat with family or friends without being subjected to a barrage of judgement — resentment — noise and unnecessary chit-chat? Do we really need the table one metre away to start conversing with each other at 100 decibels?

Why would we wish to know what cat they have or what condiments they would like in amongst all the talk of dancing and dresses and what restaurant did you go to instead of coming here?

Respect for others seems to be something that is in the past. It’s great to socialise and it’s nice to hear people are happy. In some ways, it’s interesting to hear what others are saying. But then I wonder why it is they are so keen to share. Is it real? Like with social media but in real life. At a proper table — in a pub, cafe or restaurant.

People portray happiness — friendship — family — life events. These can make it hard to take when you face isolation — loneliness — even desperation and depression.

Breaking out of routine takes courage — facing the world. Don’t make it harder. Find compassion. Find a listening ear or simply keep that social happiness to a level that allows everyone to enjoy their meal in their own way.
