Garden centres full of happy chemicals…

Short trips but hitting the targets of the four chemicals in an hour of distraction — on the doorstep for many of us. Many choices here— today is my local Parkers Garden Centre.

The senses unleashed. No longer filled with just flowers, shrubs and garden sheds. They offer so much more. Gifts, books, toiletry items and special events are now part of the deal. Cafes are a central part and often a hub for locals to meet and socialise.

The opportunities are endless. You can be there for 10 minutes or most of the morning/afternoon. Be sure to hit all 4 happy chemicals before you leave. (Not sure what they are? Look them up here)

Serotonin is collected as we walked/wheeled around the outdoor area to get some natural sunlight.

Get in the endorphins by connecting with the staff. A smile and a ‘good morning’ are enough to start them flowing. The conversation generated by being somewhere different offers the carer and me alternative topics of interest, intrigue, delight and happiness.

Adding a bit of self-care with the tester hand creams. Some very nice ones at that — lavender for my carer and rose for me. That’s another fill of dopamine achieved.

The twinkling lights of Christmas approaching, the calm and peace with reindeer’s singing. Moving through the colourful creations — a mix of traditional and modern — unique centrepieces and ideas for craft activities collected to help with that Dopamine again!

Each section is a little sanctuary offering something different. A great place to support mental health and well-being. An opportunity for all to visit somewhere that offers variety and has something for everyone. It can also be a very social place.

More dopamine can be generated with a visit to the cafe. Perhaps purchase something to take home if time is limited. Or just take in the smell of coffee and cakes as we did on this occasion. The full breakfast or lunch. If money is tight did you see something you like? Go home and make it yourself.

Keep an eye out for lots of themed events and seasonal displays. Finally, our fill of Oxytocin was gained just by being complimentary about the garden centre and the joy we had in an hour of distraction from our reality of chronic pain and fatigue.
