I am proud of you today

Until you have experienced a mental health condition I don’t honestly think you can quite imagine the torment, distress and heartache that it causes you to feel.

The effects are not just mental but also physical — purely because of the stress that it places on the body and the fatigue of managing a mind that just doesn’t stop for a second.

So quite simply, if you have pulled yourself out of a dark place today then I am proud of you and you should be proud of yourself.

Showing support to others who are in this position can be crucial but can we get away from the word proud to show our encouragement and support to those who need it the most?

Quite simply yes —put in other ways this could be:

  • My heart is filled with joy at what you have achieved today

  • Quite simply ‘Wow’

  • You look so pleased with your efforts

  • I’m so pleased for you

  • I value you and what you do for me

  • Your determination is admirable

  • You inspire me

  • I have a lot of respect for you

  • I am beyond impressed

  • I know how hard that must have been

A few words go a long way. Recognising the difficulties people face with their mental health and showing constant encouragement using some of the ideas above can really support someone who is experiencing mental health problems and trying hard to improve their lives.

Share your expressions through spoken word, written texts or even over social media. There are plenty of positive mental health quotes to be found on social media platforms which can easily be shared with a family member or friend who is in need of a bit of support.

Your words could provide much-needed confidence boosting and really make someone smile. No matter what the achievement is — how big or how small —a few words can mean so much.
