Managing the heat when you have a Pituitary condition

With the UK and popular holiday destinations facing a sharp increase in temperature and humidity those with Pituitary conditions face the prospect of additional stress being placed on the body. In turn, this can cause potentially dangerous and life-threatening symptoms to occur.

The main problems caused by the heat are:

  • dehydration (not having enough water to drink)

  • overheating

  • heat exhaustion

  • heatstroke

Some top tips to avoid this include:

  • Ensuring you take your medication as required

  • Topping up medication if you are spending time out in the hot weather — especially if you are exercising strenuously or sweating more than usual.

  • Carrying your emergency medication with you at all times

  • Having salty snacks available

  • Staying well hydrated — try and drink cold drinks, especially water

  • Staying out of the sun between 11 am and 3 pm when possible

  • Identify a room in your home that is the coolest to retreat to if needed

  • Carrying a small fan to help keep you cool

  • Using cold water sprays can be helpful

  • Wearing loose, cool clothing will be beneficial

Taking a few simple steps and precautions can make a huge difference in coping with the hot weather and climate change this looks set to be an annual event. So get planning — be safe — but also enjoy the warmth in a safe and controlled way.
