The Addison's Disease Self-Help Group aim to improve the lives of those living with Addison’s disease and pituitary insufficiency — life-threatening conditions that can severely impact the lives of those who live with the conditions.
The conditions affect the adrenal glands which are situated near the kidneys— they are rare and affect the amount of hormones produced naturally by the body — cortisol being crucial to help our bodies deal with the demands of stress placed on them throughout the day.
They cause a range of symptoms that include lack of energy — weakness — headaches — nausea — increased thirst — salt cravings and low mood. Often other medical conditions or mental health conditions are also evident in those with Addison’s or Pituitary Insufficiency.
Treatment involves the replacement of these hormones via medication and in emergencies through vital injections of hydrocortisone. Whilst regular daily medication is set by an endocrinologist it is down to the individual to manage any additional requirements during the day. This takes time and judgement to get right.
Any stressful situation will put additional demands on the already depleted adrenal glands and need ‘top ups’, rest, relaxation or a combination of all. Exercise is to be taken seriously. Anything strenuous such as swimming will require the participant to administer additional cortisol due to the change in temperature experienced when getting into cold water. Long intense sessions will also push people over the boundaries and require extra support.
An adrenal crisis can be scary for both the person living with the condition and those supporting them through it. Education on how to recognise the symptoms and how to administer the injections will help provide comfort, reassurance, and understanding and in some cases, this in itself can reduce the number of attacks experienced.
We need your support for this day and every day beyond that –- every share of the Addison's Disease Self-Help Group awareness materials — every challenge started — every penny donated can make #AddisonsDiseaseDay a success.
Together we can help improve the lives of those with Addison's Disease and Adrenal Insufficiency.
