More than just a football club — ITFC tackle major issues for local residents

EFL (English Football League) clubs offer so much more than a professional sports match day experience. Even more than academy football — disability teams — schoolwork — the women’s team — even the walking football team.

With most people living within 15 miles of a club, these are rapidly becoming hubs for loneliness — advice and support on the cost of living — volunteering — foundation work — basically, anything to support local communities utilising the space, experience and determination of well-trained staff — committed and supportive footballers — fans who want to support each other. Past players returning in key roles.

The foundation is key to links with the community. Set up purely to work with local people from all backgrounds — considering the needs of all — working out unique ways in which the club as a whole can support people through the cost of living — those going hungry — needing a warm space. Even looking at sustainability — working with local businesses.

Loneliness and mental health are a focus— reaching out to refugees and asylum seekers — supporting the mental health of young people who are struggling — tackling loneliness through twice monthly meetings for seniors — coffee clubs across the internet suitable for fans of any age— answering questions about all things football, lifestyle and traditions.

Players are expected to work within the community as part of their role at the club — it’s not enough to be a great player when signing on the dotted line. There are ambassadors wherever you look — generosity in both time and money given.

The owners focused heavily on the community and the expectations placed upon those at the club. The fan zone — family club of the year in 2022 — first timer initiatives — ways to get people to games who cannot afford it. Supporting food banks — working in partnership with charities and promoting the club's own foundation.

Ipswich Town Football Club really is one step ahead of the rest. Perhaps as a fan, I am a little biased but I struggle to see how much more a club could do to support its fans — both those who love football and those who like the initiatives and support mechanisms.

For details of everything happening at the club look out for their social media channels and download the EFL app to choose your favourite team.
