What is it about music that has the power to support our mental health? To allow those with dementia and other similar illnesses some sanctuary. But it is good for those young and old.
It has the ability to connect us with times and places of joy and happiness. Reminding and reflecting on key moments and special occasions that we have experienced.
Mind report that: “Research has found there’s a connection between music and dopamine within our brains which is linked to mood”.
They are now working with Spotify to develop monthly playlists called Mind mix— add your own tune to the themed playlist— make a small donation (minimum is 50p). Download the list to your library and see it grow! Access some free music into the equation and away you go!
Top marks for getting involved in a positive experience (once you have it all worked out that is)— supporting your own mental health — engaging with the work that Mind does and being part of something more than just a soundtrack.
Those small donations add up in the end. Just £5 will help 6 people access safe support group services through community-based mental health organisations — that’s just 10 songs.
£10 will help Mind send essential information booklets about mental health to 40 people — just 20 songs. The list when I enrolled stood at over 100 songs.
Spotify is a great app to download and really easy to use. The amount of music content available for free is incredible. Find music to help motivate you — relax you — help you reminisce.
Even exercise-related content and since Fitness Nation report that: ‘Music stimulates the part of the brain that controls movement, so it helps your body complete repetitive movements more efficiently’ then you have an added extra.
Combine the endorphins you get from exercise with the dopamines from music and you are well on the way to supporting your own mental health and achieving those exercise goals.
