Reducing screen time and why it’s important

Screen time can add up quickly during the day. Checking emails — social media — catching up on some news — even looking at the weather. Whilst this can be important it's good to try and strike a balance between healthy interactions and too much time spent staring at a screen.

The average person can spend upwards of 4.5 hours a day just on their phones alone. Add this to working on your computer and watching programmes on your tablet and that figure rises considerably.

The TB12 approach, led by NFL superstar Tom Brady, identifies increased screen time as a problem because it can lead to:

  • inactivity and weight gain

  • poor posture

  • vision problems

  • headaches and neck pain

  • psychological problems

Brady approaches this situation through 6 different solutions:

  • Setting or Checking the Limits on your Screen Time Setting

  • Turning Off Non-Essential Notifications

  • Deleting Time-Wasting Apps

  • Keeping Your Phone Out of Your Bedroom

  • Getting Outside and Exercise

  • Meditating

If you have children it’s great to educate them young. The US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute address this issue in its blog Tips to reduce screen time which looks at:

  • Talking to your family

  • Setting a good example

  • Logging screen time V active time

  • Setting screen time limits

  • Creating screen-free bedrooms

  • Making meal times family times

  • Providing other options
