After much research by coaches and gymnasts, a new recreational award scheme was launched in 2021 by British Gymnastics.
The core involves three distinct areas — discover, explore and excel. The programme is progressive. Starting from the very first basic steps up to advanced movements and skills.
At the beginner level young gymnasts work through core skills, basic apparatus and working together. As they move further into their gymnastic journey small and large apparatus are introduced to complement the core skills and working together pathways.
This allows gyms and coaches to work with the apparatus they have and gymnasts are able to achieve it no matter where they access their gymnastics. There’s even a hub where coaches can access support to plan sessions and track the progress of their participants.
Providing a varied and exciting opportunity to learn new skills but also enabling them to add their own creativity. This is in line with the new code for artistic gymnastics where artistry and individual style are now awarded bonus marks.
At each level gymnasts completing all the challenges are awarded medals for their efforts. Something that coaches report as an exciting and rewarding part of delivering the new programme.
