Royal days out to suit those with access needs

With the Coronation of King Charles III now a distant memory what better way to re-ignite that patriotic feeling than a visit to a royal residence?

The best accessible royal days out in the UK by Joanna Reeves recently reviewed some of the best places to visit that include:

  • Windsor Castle

  • Kensington Palace

  • Royal Yacht Britannia

  • Hampton Court

  • Sandringham House

  • Balmoral Castle

  • Edinburgh Castle

All were selected for their accessibility as well as special exhibitions, history and Royal splendour. Free carer tickets, disabled parking, special access routes and wheelchair hire are among some of the support mechanisms in place for those with disabilities.

Writing for the charity Motability — which provides cars, wheelchairs and mobility scooters to eligible people with disabilities — Reeve looks carefully at the essential requirements of a good day for those facing extra challenges and includes some special activities and events.

Head straight to Windsor for a glimpse of a true royal residence. If you are into fashion then get to Kensington before the end of October to be dazzled by dresses worn from Georgian times right through to Beyonce!

Fancy a trip to Edinburgh? You can take in both the castle and Royal Yacht Britannia whilst you visit.

If you want to take a trip around Buckingham Palace then you only have 10 weeks in the summer to get there so plan your trip early.

Remember that these attractions are real homes with real flaws. They are steeped in history and whilst every effort is made to accommodate guests with disabilities and other health conditions they are essentially very old heritage sites.

The key to a good day out is in your planning. So our top tips for a great day out are:

  • Plan well in advance

  • If you need parking check it is available and book early

  • Get there early to avoid the rush

  • Allow extra time to view all the rooms

  • Make yourself known to staff on arrival and ensure you know the best routes to follow
