Whilst the war in Ukraine shows no sign of ending. The cause of horror — fear — sadness — endless refugees fleeing the country — there is support through sport and exercise helping those who arrive in the UK to settle and have a better life.
Eva-Mariia’s story is that of a competitive rhythmic gymnast from Ukraine being supported by British Gymnastics. At the young age of 13 years, she fled war-torn Ukraine with her Mum who was keen to have her continue training to help her adjust to life in the UK.
The British Gymnastics Foundation has given her complimentary membership to Oxford Gymnastics Club. One of 4 gymnasts training there with the club offering free sessions. A great partnership — with the club also communicating with coaches still back in Ukraine via Zoom.
Another example comes from Active Essex who recently reported a story of ‘hope and kindness; truly showing the power physical activity has in bringing people together’.
Ognizlata Yeletenko, a refugee who fled from Ukraine, ‘has anchored herself among her community to provide a new activity opportunity that is a little different for local residents’. A qualified teacher in both belly dancing and yoga has enabled her to settle into her new community.
With the support of Active Essex volunteers and ambassadors, she has managed to lead classes — make friends — share her passion and create a calm and welcoming environment in which others can become active.
Both are an inspiration. Both stories tell of how sports and exercise can support mental well-being and integration within a local community despite the immense trauma suffered by refugees.
