The opportunity to be part of a large virtual or physical event regardless of disability with support from family and friends is aiding participation in sports and physical activity.
The series founded by Track and Field Athletics Paralympian Sophia Warner in 2016, aims to address the lack of opportunities for disabled people to participate in mass sporting events.
From her own experiences, she has generated some original ideas to make things easier. Aptly named ‘sidekicks’ are at the disabled person's disposal to push, pull and cheer their leader through the triathlons, walks, swims and cycles that complete the chosen distance.
Participants are provided with plenty of resources including their own finish line tapes, medals, t-shirts and plenty of support from online team heroes for ‘at home challenges’.
Dorney Lake in Windsor has become the home of mass participation events — hosting two triathlon events each year exclusively targeted at disabled people. No cut of time helps avoid the distress of not finishing with other participants.
On-site events and home challenges allow any mobility aids required. Showing you should never feel ashamed of using something that keeps you safe and enables you to complete your goal.
An additional bit of fun is to be had through the sponsors Marvel — actively encouraging dressing up as superheroes of choice to add an additional element of fun — enjoyment — fundraising and awareness.
Upcoming events include:
