If you are heading off on a holiday, day trip or business trip and have a long-term health condition there are some simple things you can implement into your planning to ensure a safe and successful trip.
There will be things beyond your control but simple positive steps really make a difference, without you even realising. Top five:
Get your medication well in advance
Research emergency hospital locations
Purchase adequate health insurance if outside the UK
Plan and prepare your itinerary in the same way as you would if at home
Listen to your body!
If you are embarking on an active break or heading off to compete in a sporting competition then ensure you are well prepared. Sitting on a coach, train or plane in a different position than normal could cause a whole range of problems. As could trying out an extreme sport without any physical exercise preparation prior to departure.
For those who have physiotherapy to maintain — talk to your therapist prior to departure — if you are only away on a short break then relaxing and giving the body time to recover is unlikely to affect your fitness or muscle strength. For longer trips consider some gentle exercise and use simple exercise bands and online activities to ensure you return home fit and strong.
Then finally — sit back, relax, enjoy — savour every minute and refresh!
