Exercise For Those with Disabilities &Long Term Health Problems
Please make sure you check with your doctor before you start to exercise, especially if you have a long term health problem. If you have Addison's Disease or Pituitary Insufficiency or take steroid medication for a Pituitary Condition then this link to The Addison's Self-Help Group will provide you with all the information that you need to stay safe and well.
It's no secret that exercise is good for us. That's why we volunteer on the Active Essex 'alltogether' For Inclusive Sport & Physical Activity. As ambassadors, we help support disabled people to find and participate in sport and physical activity at their own pace and in an activity that they enjoy. It can be difficult to find the right pathway so let us be your guide. Even if you don't live in Essex the information on this site can also be accessed by people around the country. The Active Essex Youtube Channel has over 300 videos to choose from that have been posted during lockdown. Have a browse and see if you can find something you enjoy. The new campaign Move with Us aims to get people active at home to give them the confidence to participate in other classes
However, if you are unsure or need to start small then what better way than to do is to visit the Undefeatable button below. It's a great campaign with many charities jumping on board to promote health and well being by incorporating exercise in your daily life. This includes so many different ways to be active at home or outside. There are numerous stories and activity ideas for you to look at. The two videos below will give you a good overview. They are simple exercises which aim to help you do 1 minute of each to get you moving slowly & carefully.
Inclusive Activities
Activity Alliance is a great place to start for disability sports. They run numerous events at different levels across the country. They also have regular blogs from disabled people sharing their experiences to help get you inspired!You'll also find some great links for coaches and instructors as well as e-learning opportunities.
Swimming / Para-Swimming
Swimming is a great way to exercise in a safe environment and offers a lot of different possibilities in terms of leisure swims, hydrotherapy, sport for confidence, aqua aerobics, club swimming & competition.
If you feel like giving it a go then click on the button for a handy link to a Para-swimming guide. Written by someone with physical disability & long term health conditions it aims to inspire you to participate. You may even find some tips about other available options you could try if water is not your preferred option.
If you live in Essex Then this Swimming Map will help you locate sessions that you can attend. Please check with your local leisure centre before attending as timetables change all the time.

SuperHero Tri Series
The Superhero Ti-Series is specifically targeted at those with disabilities or LTHC's and in fact, you cannot enter unless you fall into one of those two categories!! Events range from Supersenory where even blinking or simple arm movements are incorporated up to a full-scale mass participation Triathlon event. Another significant feature of this programme is that you are in control but can have as many side-kicks as you like and use as many aids as you need to get from beginning to end. Plus you'll be rewarded with a great medal, T-shirt and other goodies. There is a price involved but really worth a try!
Race At Your Pace
Race At Your Pace offer a wide range of challenges that you commit to making through each month of the year. You can choose from Steps completed in a day, walking, running, cycling and even wheelchair pushing! Either sign up each month and get yourself a medal at the end of the month (£10) or just download the tracker form, utilise the extensive blog section with tips and discussions to keep you motivated. You can even join virtual clubs and purchase kit.
Sport For Confidence
Sport for Confidence programmes brings together health professionals such as occupational therapists and specialist coaches in order to enable inclusive/accessible sporting activities to anyone who faces barriers to participation. The programme includes those who have challenging and complex needs such as learning disabilities, mental health conditions, physical impairments/disabilities and even homelessness. With COVID-19 Limiting leisure centre activities there are currently opportunities to ‘Stay Connected’ online in a safe environment through Zoom.
