Active Essex Support to access sport and exercise when you have a long-term health condition

EDS and Exercise - Part Four

The following are all ways you can utilise the resources provided by Active Essex and the many volunteers who work alongside them. Together they provide a mix of inspiration, guidance, support and exercise programmes.

Find Your Active Community Connectors support Essex residents in finding what works best for them and are the helping hand that can give them the confidence to get involved in a new activity. These connectors are great at supporting both Active Essex and local residents. You can check out their social pages and their profiles on the website here. Their main roles are to:

  • Offer support, advice and guidance about starting to Find Your Active, in the way you need it and will enjoy.

  • They can be a kind voice on the phone or a friendly face on the doorstep to provide advice and information about Find Your Active, with local volunteers to support if needed.

  • Lots of ideas about ways to help you improve how you feel and become more confident about going out.

  • Whether you want to find out more about local community activities, walking groups or how to move more within the comfort of your own home, they are here to help.

  • They can help you access home activity packs, online classes, and more.

Essex All Together Disability Sports Ambassadors main roles are to Inspire, deliver, promote and support those living with long-term health conditions to access sport and exercise by:

  • Sharing their stories about physical activity or sports to inspire others

  • Help promote inclusive sport and fitness activities available in Essex

  • Support other ambassadors in new activities & goals they want to achieve

  • Promote the benefits of moving more

You can meet the team here. There's a specific Activity Finder to help you locate activities in your area that are suitable for those with long-term health conditions. Find out how to access the Superhero Series aimed at those with disabilities and health conditions. Read blogs from Time To Heal about all things sport and exercise, managing health conditions, hydration, fuelling the body, tracking health and much more!

We Are Undefeatables is a National Campaign by Sport England which is targeted at those who have specific medical conditions. Active Essex has its own blog as part of this initiative which shares how people's lives have been transformed by participation in sport and exercise. You can also access resources on the campaign site here.

The Active Essex Workout Channel provides residents with a variety of exercise opportunities that can be completed at home with registered professionals who have been approved by the council. You can choose between high impact, gentle exercise , active families and health and well-being. Access the weekly timetable here.

Sport For Confidence is a National programme that combines the collective expertise of Occupational Therapists and Coaches to make reasonable adjustments and reduce barriers to participation for disabled people and those with long term health conditions. Leisure Centres are the hubs for the activities run across Essex. These can be accessed in the following centres:

  • Basildon Sporting Village

  • The Brentwood Centre

  • Canvey Island Leisure Centre

  • Clacton Leisure Centre

  • Chelmsford Riverside Leisure Centre

  • Colchester Leisure World

  • Witham Leisure Centre

There are a range of different opportunities available including Seated Social Sports, Boccia, Dance, Fun Fitness, Swimming and Multi-Sports. Before starting you will be contacted by an Occupational Therapist to discuss your specific requirements. This is then discussed with the coaches to ensure the sessions meet the needs of the individual. You can contact the team here to access the current timetable and start your journey into sport.

Active Essex is highly committed to supporting everyone in the area to access exercise and sports opportunities that meet their specific needs. The above programmes and initiatives provide a safe and comprehensive support network for those with long-term health conditions and disabilities. Good luck in your quest to become more active!
