Exercise For All - Introducing 'We Are Undefeatables'

This blog looks at the challenges facing those with long term health conditions. ’We are Undefeatables’ is a really good place to get started and here we aim to help you utilise this programme. It’s been running now since August 2019 as a national campaign, led by Sport England and funded through The National Lottery. It highlights the fact that there are 1 on 4 people in this country who are trying to manage at least one long term health problem and are working alongside 15 health and social care charities. Make physical activity part of your life and especially during the lockdown. Find some inspirational stories through the links within this blog and join us on our adventure. They have re-launched this month in line with COVID-19 and will be hosting a helpful Webinar on the 5th of May.

We Are Undefeatable

As a country, at the moment we are becoming ‘Undefeatable’ by the way our lives have changed. We have moved on and dealt with what we have to. However, time at home can also mean that it’s harder than ever to get your exercise fix and especially if you do have underlying medical conditions, mental health problems or if your exercise is completed through your actual work.

Despite us being able to go out once a day, this may not be possible for some and especially those in wheelchairs or those having to use other working aids. This is especially difficult for those who cannot self propel and/or can only do a small amount. Therefore, if it materialises that you need to have your chair pushed then that equates to ‘fresh air’ and not actual exercise. Great for an injection of Vitamin D but not enough to match any exercise lesson or class that you may have been attending prior to lockdown. In addition to this if family or friends normally visit and help you to get to places or take you out for ‘walks’ then you will be missing the contact with others and the exercise.

With alternative videos and exercises to choose from by the thousand, how do we know what is safe, or what may actually be harmful, if the level is right and whether the actual person leading the session is qualified to do so? All important factors to consider.

So what is the answer to tackle this problem and get us moving? We have found a great way for us to get going on this. So, where do we actually start and what do we need to do to keep safe and well?

Let us try and unpick this for you and guide you in the right direction. However, please remember ’. It’s been running now since August 2019 as a national campaign, led by Sport England and funded through The National Lottery. It highlights the fact that there are 1 on 4 people in this country who are trying to manage at least one long term health problem and is working alongside 15 health and social care charities. One of those being Mind which is, in my opinion, the best mental health Charity/guide that you could ask for. The programme has been re-launched in line with the COVID-19 pandemic and they are hosting a webinar on the 5th of May.

Right, so let's get to it! So we will start right at the beginning here with ’We are Undefeatables’. It’s been running now since August 2019 as a national campaign, lead by Sport England and funded through The National Lottery. It highlights the fact that there are 1 on 4 people in this country who are trying to manage at least one long term health problem and is working alongside 15 health and social care charities. One of those being Mind which is in my opinion the best mental health Charity / guide that you could ask for. The programme has been re-launched in line with the COVID-19 pandemic and the are hosting a webinar on the 5th May.

It looks at a huge range of activity levels and activities to try. If you can implement these into your own day then they will have a huge impact on both your physical and mental health. Plus once you get on this road it has the potential to improve your sense of well being, give you a sense of achievement and help you to adopt a positive mindset that is crucial right now and something you find may be good to keep us going after the lockdown is lifted. It may be that this is just a ‘stop-gap’ activity to see you through until your normal activities and classes can be accessed again.

This is just an introduction to the programme and following on from this is ‘learn as we battle’ and Exercise Alternatives, we will be posting a more in-depth view on the overwhelming number of internet exercise classes and ideas so you can find the right thing for you, that is delivered by qualified instructors. We will be sourcing some suggestions on activities you may never have heard of or considered. In the meantime have a good look through the ‘We Are Undefeatables’ website which is amazing! It’s packed with information about exercise that you can implement into your day at a very low level and moving up to more intense exercise for those who are able. You will be able to watch inspirational stories and it will get you thinking about what you might like to try and goals that you have. We have also included some links to the most relevant pages below, along with some other campaigns that and projects that you may find helpful to get you going.

Coronavirus Activities

This special feature talks about the impact since Coronavirus took us to war and will help to follow the essential information you need based on the Governments advice.

‘As we navigate the changes to our routines due to COVID-19, it is more important than ever to focus on the things that we can do to take care of ourselves and our loved ones. There will be ups and downs, of course – and moving more when you can is still just as important as accepting when you can’t. But no matter what level of activity you find you can manage, it is still very much worth celebrating’ We Are Undefeatables website’.

I love this mental health / relaxation video - Have some music ready!

However, it was made pre-COVID-19 so some of the things may not be relevant, but it will give you some great ideas.

Active Essex - Leading the way!

Active Essex and All Together Active Essex for whom I work as a Disability Sports Ambassador for have also taken on the sentiments of this programme by focusing on people with long term medical problems. They have a monthly focus document which tackles areas such as motivation, inspiring stories, activities that are safe to do. Blogs and events and activities are promoted by the team of ambassadors. You don’t need to live in Essex to benefit from this information. It’s well worth a read and you can sign up to the newsletters etc.

Below are links to some of their pioneering work which compliments the work of Undefeatables perfectly. This includes a timetable with a broad range of classes delivered by qualified staff who you can read about. There are also links to the YouTube channel that has been launched and some safe but gentle sessions to try at home, including exercise bingo. There is something for everyone.
