For sometime now I have been trying to employ this strategy when outside of the home. It's not something I have created 'hearing voices' have published this and I try to utilise it to the best of my ability but of course with my own stamp on it.
The title says it all really. The aim is to draw your attention to a chosen voice or voices and try to block out everything else. The aim is to focus on what you are wanting to listen to. This may be hard if its voices in your head and or a conversation with just a few people that's jumping back and forth inside or outside of our mental health heads.
Yesterday without even thinking I used this strategy at home and it worked. It was a small step but something to build on. Two friends visited to help us with a few jobs. At one point carer had one talking to her and the other talking too. then focused on me. Struggling to keep up I turned my focus to one side and pressed my finger onto my ear lobe facing away from other conversation.I could listen to the joke I knew was coming this particular friend. I couldn't tell you what that was about now but I did listen at the time!
I realised afterwards that carer could actually tell me what her conversation was about once they left. One small step and relatively low key, low sensory scenario but a positive that I tried. It's a huge mountain still to climb but if you don't start you don't get anywhere slow, medium or fast pace. That's if I remember.
I am not sure that pressing onto 1 ear lobe in a busy restaurant or hospital scenario for example will but we just need to see what happens.
