The question is the invisible what?
The invisible disability, the invisible pain, the invisible mental health?
The invisible sees a large % of the population wondering why you feel so ill, why it's hard to lift your head from the pillow in the morning, why they say you look ok, why when they can't comprehend your needs.
Words can't convey if your brain isn't wired that way. Letters and writing are my method of communication when speech leaves me speechless, confused and out of my depth. At this point the words 'I'm fine' or 'don't worry' it's not important come into play.
An easy deflection away from blurting out sentences that just make no sense and needing to either suck up the humiliation or be laughed at because in that moment you have no way to convey the information that you so desperately wish you could.
Invisible illness and disability aren't understood. Why is it that if you are in a wheelchair you must be paralysed? Why is it that you look 100% fine but no one knows the signs of diabetes insidious which leaves adults needing a fast trip to a disabled toilet?
Should we really be forced into explaining to strangers why we need that disabled toilet? Why we need to spend time in a wheelchair even if we can walk for a bit?
Do we expect others to explain their life history and ask them questions about their life just so they can go on a trip to the supermarket? Of course we wouldn't. If we did we'd be making a long line!
Invisability is everywhere. Despite advances in the understanding of disability mainly through sport, that just cracks a small surface of the rotating globe of invisibility. So much still to be done, so much to understand.
Social media often fills the gap for disabled people with both visible and invisible.
It's another layer of invisibility but is without the need to explain yourself or portray yourself as someone that you aren't. For many it's a lifeline and the only thing that keeps them going. The only thing that gives them a purpose to life. A human voice or text message from someone would mean a whole lot more, not to mention someone to listen or read.
This is discussed in more detail in the 3 elements page.
