As February rolls around the world tends to think of Valentines. The heart is arguably the most commonly used symbol to express several emotions, especially love and romance.
However, it has greater meaning than that. The heart can hold many feelings of pain and sorrow, which is why many people dread this time of year. It can provoke feelings of loneliness and emptiness.
In 2023 US-based ‘Grief Haven’ founded by Susan Whitmore to support those who are grieving has created a worldwide symbol that means the same in every language—a grief pin that can be worn by anyone, anywhere—a symbol that says, “Someone I love dearly has died, and I am grieving.”
The group offer three beautiful grief pins. The upside-down heart represents a heart in grief—a heavy heart turned upside-down. The diamond shape symbolises “hope,” and the scroll is an ancient symbol of “love”.
The intention is to enable others to identify with their grief in the same way you could see the pain of someone with a broken leg or other health condition or disability. Therefore, provoking others into showing compassion and support for the person who has lost someone dear to them.
They advocate that one day, with “hope” and “love,” each person will be able to turn our hearts right-side up again. So whatever you are feeling making these great crafts can be uplifting and supportive.
