The Superheroes at Home Summer Challenge powered by Marvel is an event designed specifically for those who consider themselves to have a disability. They can be supported by as many sidekicks as required to help them push, pull, slide, roll and motivate them to accomplish their exercise goals. Participants are encouraged to use whatever aids they require to complete the challenge.
As part of Team Ironman, three Essex All Together Ambassadors Donna, Billy and I are travelling around the world virtually finishing at the home of this year’s Olympic and Paralympic games in Paris.

Week One
Suzanne and sidekick Mum Sheila - “Our focus has been on getting moving in my local environment and taking in the world of nature all around us — trying to build our step count as we go!
"We have been walking along the local seafront area — in Holland-on-Sea there is now an accessible slope allowing those with mobility problems to access the promenade and get away from all the traffic, taking in the beach and the sound of the waves. We’ve even had some sunshine along the way! On Friday we even stopped at our favourite seafront Flags cafe for some refreshment and rest before pushing back up the slopes!
“Our biggest day of the week was a trip to Colchester Zoo to explore the accessible route around all the animals. Taking in all the different areas I clocked up a massive 16,030 steps! It was hard work and tiring but it was definitely worth the effort! Just shows how a fun family day out can also be a good source of exercise. Getting moving doesn’t have to be just about organised sports.
“Gardening has been my other focus. With the weather improving it’s a great time to get outside and have a mental health break, but at the same time work on gentle movement, giving me some strength and conditioning as well as all the aerobic work I’ve achieved this week”.
Billy and his sidekick son Noah - The first week completed and they reached a huge 105.9 km, despite having a rocky first week due to illness and Fibromyalgia flaring. But maintaining a level of activity was crucial in his ongoing self-management
KM’s have been accumulated through riding, walking, superhero adventuring, reaction testing, kung fu training, meditating, catching, throwing, kicking and nature watching. Rightly so they are pleased with how their start so far! After some fantastic kung fu practice, Noah passed his first grade too!
Donna and her sidekicks from Sport For Confidence
“Wow, what a week it’s been on the first week of the Superhero Series challenge. I can’t believe it’s been a week but here is what I got up to. Days one and two consisted of relaxation days doing arts and crafts.
“Monday was quite a slow day as I was doing Oliver McGowan's mandatory training. Tuesday was a busy, busy day as I was attending and supporting/volunteering with Sport For Confidence at the big health day”
Donna also attended a dinner dance and a Sport for Confidence creative dance session as well as doing some arts and crafts with friends afterwards. The dancing on the floor added to her impressive step count for the day! Friday was a slow day so her sidekicks helped her out!
Look out for more updates as we head into week two of the challenge!
